It's interesting... the whole cold brew concept.
From reading directions on how to do it at home with your own grounds, as well as seeing other people do it at home, it has its benefits.
One thing, it's supposed to be less bitter and less acid tasting. Then again, according to some foodies, salt can take that bitterness away.
But the cold brew itself (water, mesh wrapped coffee, steep X hours in fridge) is better for the body than hot normal coffee. Did I mention "allegedly"?
The down fall is it can be messy if you're using some sort of at home cold brew system because the mesh liner that holds the coffee (in some systems) can't hold a lot. Meaning, you use ground coffee and that mesh strainer makes a mess when you're trying to empty it (or add water to it). Or, the prepackaged filter bags to stuff in a pitcher, gets stuffed into the mesh strainer and sometimes they fit, sometimes they don't (the Dunkin Donuts cold brew packs don't fit in the mesh liner of the pitcher we have, so we had to open it. It's still chilling out in the fridge so I can't say how it tastes). When you try to add the amount of water you need, you've got to allow for expansion because the strainer and the bags make less room in the pitcher than your allotted cups of water. With the system I have, if we add small to medium bags in the strainer, and it calls for 6 cups of water, usually we can add 5 cups before the water line is too high. It's been a lot of trial and error.
I do notice a difference in taste, when I compare cold brew to iced coffee... as the iced coffee is just adding ice to a hot cup of java. Cold brew, having been in the refrigerator for 24 hours, soaking in its own flavor, is pretty good. But it depends on the brand and how long you let it marinate.
These already made pods that are out there, do all the steps for you, and all you need to do is add water and any additions you want (milk, creamer, sugar). Although most cold brews are pretty sweet because the bitterness has been lowered. So not a lot of sweetener is needed if that's your thing. Just like the Java House I bought... it's a pod that can actually go in a Keurig machine for hot instant coffee or be added over ice for iced coffee... just add water.

All in all, maybe this is the new thing to do, to save money in the wallet instead of going to the coffee houses every day, to order the same exact thing??
I guess I'll be something new to try, until the next big wave of "gotta try it!!" happens....
