It's time to start keeping the cars gassed up

Summer is slowly creeping upon us, and with the rainy season starting to show it's ugly head, it's time to start keeping the cars full and watch for puddles.

Why?

Because the rain comes down in buckets, quickly, almost every day. Monday starts May, which means it's the unofficial start of hurricane season, where you blink and it's June 1. Which means the warmer waters that haven't cooled off, are potentially bringing us some bad weather over the next six months.

It started last night for us, since Miami and Fort Lauderdale area got it last month - water in places it doesn't belong.

No, we didn't get flooded, but we got a wild and crazy super charged thunder storm over night, where this morning, the birds are still trying to sort it out.

Over the past couple weeks, the birds have been one Cheerio short of a box of Fruit Loops, crazy. All their chirping and flittering - something is going to go down. Just don't know what.

Last night we had a storm and it's windy as all get up this morning. I actually went outside to take pictures and was watching the birds struggle to fly as the wind was prohibiting them from trying to move. It was weird to see because it looked like an unseen forces was just pushing back at the birds when all they wanted to do was go forward.

Some of the other pictures I took, show the grey skies and it looks like snow in places, while others looked like something more ominous was trying to touch down. I had my camera set to "Landscape" so I tried to do minimal editing.

I still haven't fully sorted out the extras on this thing, even though Amazon says its a discontinued model and they're selling it "renewed" or third parties are selling it as part of a package deal.

One day I'll get it all checked out... One day.

Until that happens, hopefully we won't have crazy storms and no hurricanes.

I got a jury duty summons in the mail yesterday and they're apparently placing people "on call", as I'm requested for the entire month of June. I don't know how that's going to work out, except I've got to "call June 2 to access reporting instructions for the first week".

I haven't had jury duty since we moved here (2011). Prior to that, it was probably around 2007. Apparently I'm not doing a good job hiding if they've found me. I've got to go in Monday to work and ask about what to do, since I won't know if I'm one of the chosen until the night before. This is going to be really fun... 😕 There goes any type of day off for that month, or even the possibility of other work (not that it's been happening so quick)... 😔 This is definitely going to suck.

Guess that's it for now. Going to see what's going on in the rest of my house...

They could afford to pay the "Taxman"...

But they couldn't afford to pay the Bolan estate (see links below)?

My mom and I just finished watching Ghosted on Apple TV+. It's a new Chris Evans movie where the synopsis from Apple TV is:

Salt-of-the-earth Cole (Evans) falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie (de Armas)—but then makes the shocking discovery that she's a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.

It sounds like your typical chick flick romantic comedy meets action movie, but it had some loopholes in it, that I just can't work out. I haven't been able to watch a movie in years, without nitpicking at it (music, scene goofs, etc).

I mean, - SPOILER ALERT -  the Bond part of this movie kept referring to Chris Evans as "The Taxman". Which, every time someone said it, they'd start singing the 1966 boy band song. It was starting to get eye rollingly old.

Especially when there were other songs on the soundtrack, but yet, the official track list doesn't even have any of the aired music - just the instrumental background scene stuff (see here). When you reference a randomly epic glam rock song (T Rex) and you can't even play it, do you even have the dosh to pay the licensing fee for it? Skydance certainly paid enough to keep the Fab Four's estates a little full.

If you Google the trailer, the song played through out the 3 minute and change video is The Proclaimers I'm Going To Be (500 Miles), which is not even in the movie.

At all.

Funny thing is this song happens to be a popular tune for movie soundtracks, truth be told, but why use it as a promotional tool and not include in in the movie?

Weird reference but I get it - because the two characters do actually end up traveling together throughout the movie. So a #win for that?

Also, quick search found the unofficial list of songs in the movie that are no where online to actually purchase as the "OST":

1. Feel It Still – Portugal. The Man
2. Love Is Everywhere (Beware) – Wilco
3. Like Sugar – Chaka Khan
4. Heart of Glass – Deborah Karry
5. Sound & Color – Alabama Shakes
6. Pretty Please – Dua Lipa
7. Last Night – The Traveling Wilburys
8. There’s No Other Way – Blur
9. My Sharona (Re-Recorded) – The Knack
10. Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet
11. Baby – Charli XCX
12. Taxman – The Beatles
13. Uptown Funk (feat. Bruno Mars) – Mark Ronson
14. Love Again – Dua Lipa
15. 20th Century Boy – Marc Bolan
16. Danger Global Warming – The Blacksmoke Organisation
17. Every Time – APM Music

The other thing I didn't understand was a random location jump. This being a spy movie, the two main characters are all over the place.

However, - SPOILER ALERT - there's no way you can get from Tower Bridge in London to the middle of the desert in Pakistan thru an underground tunnel. If you're going to gun your way through a maze in London, you're going to end up in either France, Belgium or the Netherlands depending on where you go. Otherwise you end up in Ireland or the ocean. You can't end up in the Middle East by chasing baddies through a cave that doesn't belong in that location.

I'm not geography / map person, but that just is a big goof, especially when the scene tells you where the character is beginning at that moment (you know.. the title card plays out saying the location as the character is walking in the place).

I just felt the overall appeal was kind of lost, but not in a total "this is shit" way, but a "if they did a little more research on it, it'd be good" way. Like, "edit it a bit better, please". My mom liked it - it wasn't bad, but she said it worked itself out in the end. Which is why I'm not going to create more spoilers. If you want to see Captain America in a new Apple TV+ production, try it out yourself.

If anything, do it for the cast list:
Chris Evans
Ana de Armas
Adrien Brody
Mike Moh
Tate Donovan
Amy Sedaris
Lizze Broadway
Mustafa Shakir
Anthony Mackie
John Cho
Sebastian Stan
Ryan Reynolds
Anna Deavere Smith
Tim Blake Nelson
Tiya Sircar
Stephen Park
Humza Shabazz
Burn Gorman
Marwan Kenzari
Israel Vaughan
Victoria Kelleher
Jordan Blair Mangold Brown
Zane Shaw
Stephanie Weis
Dexter Fletcher

Something else needs to be seen before I get too creative in this review...

"Good Day Sunshine"

I went out early this morning to move my car so my mother could get to the pool before she looses a parking space (there's a new class that started), and I had to run back in the house to grab my camera.

The most interesting sunrise was happening and I wanted to capture it before it went away. Doesn't help the fact the birds were going a little crazy this morning. Storm must be coming again.

All pictures were taken on my (now discontinued) Canon EOS Rebel T7i and edited in (now the paid only) Photoshop (CS5). I added a "sharpen" filter and my name to the photos. Otherwise, WYSIWYG.

Also, I had turned around so you see both sides of the street, which is why there are the non strong colorful clouds mixed in to this upload.

Adding this as a quick post, as I need to get ready for work (so in my rush, I think a photo got uploaded twice... oops)!

Cheers

The fridge squawked this morning | We have a 10 year contract & this is the summer preview

About a month ago, I wrote how the refrigerator doesn't know Zuul yet, however it still spoke to me. The front panel lit up telling me to order a new filter and an alarm rang out. Well, this morning when I was getting water, the panel lit up telling me to replace the filter and the alarm loudly went off. Even the "REPLACE FILTER" light kept blinking.

I guess the refrigerator knows it's words properly, but it doesn't know how to calmly request filter changing. It's going to be one of those things I do this weekend, I guess....

Hotwire sucks. Their customer service sucks. Their service sucks enough that you don't want to deal with it.

We had an outage last night and people aren't happy.

Let me preface it by saying this: Sure... we had some nice, calming, strong, breeze come through for most of the day, but it wasn't anything close to hurricane level. It was the type we sometimes get during the afternoon rain storms in the summer. Nothing to get up in arms about.

Okay, back to story.

About 4pm the internet and TV go out. My mother is in the middle of streaming a movie when the picture goes black. The new Vizio TV is still on, but the streaming isn't. She looks at her phone and tries to get online. Can't.

She calls Hotwire to inquire about the sudden outage and they said they are aware of it. The problem is, this person is in Miami and they are having terrible storms (search "Miami storms April 11 2023" in whatever browser you use and you'll find videos of flooding. Guess they're getting rain?) which is causing power issues. So Hotwire can see there's an electrical problem and there is nothing they can do about it.

My mom informs the guy that:
1. We aren't in Miami. We are in Fort Myers.
2. We have power and electricity. Otherwise she'd not be on the phone, in the light of the house. There'd be absolutely nothing on, where it's just the internet and television service that went out.
3. We aren't having any storms of any sort. It's a little cloudy and windy, sure, but everything in nature is fine in this neighborhood.

The guy responds saying it's a problem around my community. Hotwire is aware of it. He name checks another community (which is about 2 miles away from my house) hoping that will get my mother off the phone. It doesn't, but obviously, since Hotwire isn't admitting it's their stuff, what are you going to do?

Something else was said that it's a national thing, and I said to my mother I didn't think Hotwire was national, and if they are using that excuse, is it like the time Comcast cut a cable in Tampa and the state went dark?

About a year ago, Comcast allegedly was doing something in Tampa at a big distribution center and wires were cut, making the whole state lose its Xfinity services for day or two. It wasn't the best thing to happen, but they fixed it.

So state wide outage means it's got to be fixed quick? Who knows.

Meanwhile, this doesn't look good for what the next ten years will be. My community has a decade long contract with the service provider and if services are rendered useless at a sneeze, no one can get work done (there are people here who work from home). As it happens to be, one of the parcels was set to have their monthly Zoom meeting last night, but didn't, since there was no internet.

Oh, the irony..

Since the whole internet service deals with wireless technology, it makes things harder, as there's nothing you can really unplug and test. Service goes into the Nokia box and then streams out wirelessly to other areas of the house. If the box says there is a failure, it's not like you can see if the coax cable came loose as there isn't one. No wires except an Ethernet and power cable.

Blurry pictures of the failed box:

I was in a rush last night so the lights on the box look like they're exploding. The red light is the failure light.

When we finished our dinner and my mom finished making phone calls to people in the neighborhood (regarding the lack of Hotwire), I took her phone off the Wi-Fi spray and had her check the local social networks. Her Facebook and Nextdoor apps were loaded with complaints from people in the community, saying how this is so horrible and what has the master board gotten us in to? We can't deal with this for ten years, especially in the summers when we get storms. One good wind will knock us off the grid for who knows how long.

The master board thought this would be the best way to future proof the community as many people were getting in to fiber optics. It was also the most economical. Well, it's proving difficult as the services aren't available in cloudy skies and there is no local service center you can call in to, to see if there are problems in your area. We're stuck like Chuck and now people are wondering (even more) if there's something the residents can do, to make complaints to a Better Business Bureau type of place. Sue the company or something. We got swindled by our master board and those members are probably getting a nice kick back, which is why they're turning a blind eye.

"Everything is fine" they say. "We have no problems", they say. So when the internet goes out in the middle of your Zoom call or your kids can't finish their remote learning from school, what do you do? Surely not everyone is gaming around here... life is happening. But the board doesn't see this. They refuse to acknowledge there's a problem.

In the end, we're going to have to deal with this and it's frustrating as all hell. You vote for people to make the best decisions for where you live, and you get kicked around and are given something useless. Wow, sounds like other things going on in this world, don't it???

Yes, the internet did get restored, evident by this posting. My mom said around 9:30 last night, she got a text from a neighbor asking if the TV came back on. My mom checked (she wasn't in the living room), and sure enough, the TV played. Texted neighbor back, saying it worked, and the neighbor said she didn't have hers yet.

I guess it went on for her a little later because my mother didn't hear anything.

This morning, her TV worked, but just as I was about to wrap this post up, she asked for help in the living room. There was a message on the screen about there being a problem with the DRM and the station couldn't be played.

Wait, what?

Doesn't "DRM" mean "Digital Rights Management" and it's about copyright protection? Which is why you can't copy a CD or DVD because it's protected media?? What does that have to do with the cable station streaming to our cable box???? What in the actual hell?! All of a sudden the news stations are copy written and you can't watch them??

I ended up having to unplug the TiVo box and turn it back on. Then I needed to re-connect it to the internet as that's the only way we can watch anything on that thing. Five minutes later, TV works.

Still doesn't explain the whole DRM thing, but whatever. This piece of crap service we have is just another nail in the coffin on how tech can't save everything...

Time to get ready for work.

Is it the same? No. Is it similar?

Perhaps.

I know I have talked about seeing a sticker on a car, where it is some sort of crying nocturnal animal, asking that people don't honk since they "hate it here" already.

Well, I found a (what looks like Rocky Horror-esque) version from a completely different artist.

Link is here

The guy goes by "Ludwig Van Bacon" and he has a lot of very "not safe for work" (NSFW) artwork, mixed with some very "safe for work" artwork.

Aka "cute and creepy art"

PLEASE BE ADVISED:
Graphic nature warning in the following storefront link.

Ludwig Van Bacon storefront on Amazon

Please note / fair do's:

If you're checking this blog post out when you're not in the comfort of your own home and click on the Artist's storefront link, there will be pictures that will come up that are offensive or not politically correct for mass viewing.

Or, you're home and are offended by NSFW / political / dark items / satire, please do not click the aforementioned Ludwig Van Bacon storefront link.

For example, the ones that are naughty are of (mostly) nude characters in various posing.

This includes a series called "Deer Daddy", which is a man (typically in a business suit) wearing a deer skull over his head and has a naked female pictured with him (sitting in a sexual manner).  Other naughty pictures are of genitalia parodies (like something called "KY Jellyfish" which is a drawing of a penis but is drawn to be an exaggerated jellyfish swimming).

There are also dark images and fear mongering images, but among all of this, you'll find the positive ones include scenes from Labyrinth, Beetlejuice, The Never Ending Story, Rocko's Modern Life, and other movies or shows my generation and older might get nostalgic over. There are also cats (the "Rainbow Bridge" one is amazing for someone who has lost a pet), Al Pacino's Scarface and Brandon Lee's The Crow also are listed.  But it's not just movies and television.

The artist seems to have an array of eye candy to sell and you really have to sift through the dark to get to the light.

Check it out, but don't say I didn't warn you. Or, as Kate Lister (host of Betwixt the Sheets) says, you've been given your fair do's.

Until I can scrounge some cash to buy one of the Laby prints (and buy my own house).

Cheers
