I wish my tape player wasn't in storage

I was gifted a box of assorted (1990s and very early 2000s) Rap and Alt Rock CDs last week.

Out of respect to the person who gave me the albums, I'm not going into detail of why I am the proud owner of Compton and Long Beach sounds, but I can say "omg, it brings me back to high school". T, where ever you are, you're missed but your music will live on. ❤✊

Within this carton of memories, there were two cassette tapes. One is "Power Rap" circa 1986, with SuperBowl Shuffle by the Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew (now straight up... let's be honest... who doesn't remember that happening???) and the second is "New Jack City / Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack" from 1991 and features the likes of Ice-T and Queen Latifah (in early  / newly minted non group status).

The problem with the first tape is it's not in circulation anymore. The only thing I could find on Amazon was the vinyl edition from a third party seller (It's a used copy to boot. It's raises the question of how 'used'????). eBay doesn't even list it in search results, however Google shows it's there. Clicking the link, it's "sold out" and there's no other information. A site called "discogs" has it (kinda), but it's a marketplace | community and I can not vouch for this site. Honestly, I think this was a one and done type of tape and when the compact discs started taking over the music world, rarities like this went out the wayside.

The second tape is still being produced as Amazon is selling it in various formations - Streaming, MP3, Audio CD, Vinyl and Audio Cassette. All priced "within reason" ($4.89 for cassette to $35 for CD).

I wish I could find my tape player because I would take it out of whatever tote bin it's being stored in, and I'd convert both tapes to MP3 form, to be able to listen in my car. I'm sure the Power Rap tape is a hoot because we all know how awesome stuff was in the 80s. 😂😜

Had I still had my VW, I'd be able to play the tapes because the Golf had a tape player and CD player. Let's face it; I bought the car in 2003 right on the cusp of the end of cassettes being extremely popular. With my (2013) Hyundai Accent, it's CDs or an AUX in port. Plus there's a USB for an MP3 player. I'm lucky there's the CD player because the 2017 Elantra only has the AUX or USB in. Pretty soon those will go away too, I reckon.

Anyway, like Ms. Babs once sang...
Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan
Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile happy your days (I can dream of the old days)
Life was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Every street lamp seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters and the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The still cold smell of morning
A street lamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Touch me,
It is so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me,
You'll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day has begun

Two second update (I hope)

I wanted to update my posting about the fitness watch I am using. Now that I've been wearing it for two weeks, it seems to be holding quite well.

I charged the band this past Sunday (the 22), when the percentage was down to 28. That means it went 13 days with one charge. I think it is because I turned off the "Find Phone" and "Anti-Lost" settings. I've yet to charge it again.

There seems to now be a discrepancy in the steps with the tracker and my phone. I think because I'm wearing loose fitting clothes (unfortunately we get a provided uniform where it's a "one size fits most, not all"). It's in the 2,000 step range, where my phone is the larger number. I'm still trying to sort out how to fix that, but I'm able to manually add exercises into RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal, so it's turning into a wash at the end of the day.

I did review the watch on Amazon (seen here). I gave it a 4 out of 5 star review because it's not a horrific product in the end. It just has a few hiccups (as I've mentioned in other postings). It would be an awesome product if VeryFitPro would sync to all fitness apps and you could read the text on the phone in sunlight. Yes, it's a long review... much like my postings.

Did I mention that I talked with a woman the other day who has a theory about pricing on Amazon? She seems to think that Sundays are the best day for shopping on the site. I do happen to think she's on to something, as the tracker cost me $19.99 (on a Sunday) and it went up to $32.99 when I had checked on it a few days later. However, yesterday when I sent the woman the link to my review, the tracker was down to $25.99 and "in stock May 01". Does this mean it's on it's way back to a lower price for Sunday? Is it because it's currently out of stock? I don't know. I guess on Sunday I'll have to log in to Amazon and check it out.

That's about it... Time to get ready for work.

If you poke a hole in it, will it taste like coconut rum?

Yesterday I took a field trip over to Sanibel with people and filled about 70 pictures on my 16GB camera card. Of all the snapshots I took, I ended up only "saving" editing down less than 10 (for the blog).

It was an interesting expenditure out there, as the group I was with, wanted something new to do. We went to "The Historical Museum", which ended up being an hour's (guided) tour through 6 or so houses (all placed on the same property and a 25 foot step from each other). Flash photography wasn't welcome, but you're able to walk inside each house and take photos. Most of the furniture and items are original, and there are signs everywhere saying "do not sit" | "fragile". Due to my group being in most of the photos, I'm only uploading the ones with out people. This also means there aren't that many to choose from.

If you poke a hole in it, can you get coco rum?

Tastes a little woody....

This dude's been in the sun too long

We then went walking around plazas and I ended up finding more stuff to view.

That's what he said!

The flowers caught my eye, as they were just hanging around in a random plant, and the "upstairs" sign was pretty cool. It was in a clothing store (really for older women) and I thought it was very industrial and steam punk looking, the way everything centered in that area. I was sitting in a really comfortable seat for way too long at the point I took the pictures!

I finally charged my fitness tracker last night. It got down to 28% by 10pm, so I took it off my wrist, took it apart (the band off) and charged it over night. This morning when I woke up, it was all set to go and ready to be put back together. Guess I'll be waiting another week and a half to charge it again? I'm still working on figuring out the step ratio though...

Until next time...

"If you could only see how blue her eyes can be..."

Yesterday at work, I happened to be in one of the open air apartment building's atrium setting up for a party. I looked up and there was the most amazing color combinations of the sky and the building. Between the blue of the sky and the salmon color of the apartment, it was a nice combination. I had to take a couple pictures before I continued on with my work.

Both photos WYSIWYG. No editing.

On another note, speaking of work, I learned from one of the residents that if you buy something on Amazon on a Sunday, it's going to be less expensive than if you buy on a weekday. It makes sense because I bought that fitness tracker on a Sunday (because I got it on a Tuesday... I got Prime!!) and it was $19.99 where now it's listing as $39.99. So a twenty dollar difference for a random day of the week is a good thing, I reckon. Maybe this is an unknowingly known secret that I'm just finding out??

Oh, with my last review of the tracker and now that it's been over a week:

I've yet to charge it since I received it. The app says the battery is at 41% and I've only taken it off my wrist to take a shower. So major bonus for an electronic to have such a good power life? Outside of that, it's been interesting because I've kept my phone in my pocket at work this week. It seems like there's about 5,000 steps difference depending on my workday, between my Health app (the iPhone's installed motion tracker) and my watch). Maybe it's because my phone is in my (2 sizes too big unfortunately) pants pocket and it's bouncing around too much, or the motion tracking part of the watch is off kilter and I need to reset it. I'll have to test it out this weekend because I'm not working. If I can get them more closely aligned with similar numbers, then it's the pants. If it's a big difference again, I'll reboot the watch (there's an option for that via the app). By the way, the battery life on my phone isn't diving to 30% by 4pm lately either. I think I inadvertently toggled one of the settings off in the fitness app.

That's it for right now; I'm off to go do some errands and possibly take pictures.

Be good, be safe, do your research and see you in the next post.

Whistling "Silver Bells" during a Sugar High

... and it's the middle of April!

I picked up a packet of "Bubblegum Frappe" mix this morning at one of the local big box retailers. It was on sale (90 cents) and I figured "what the hell". Other flavors ("Cinnamon Roll" and "Cotton Candy") listed for $1.24 and a single box of six (coffee versions) were two dollars and change.

I know.. I know... there's way too much damn sugar and calories in this thing.

AND Amazon is selling a 4 pack for way too much ($14.80).

However, after following the directions, I made the packet... with milk. It tastes and smells like a frozen piece of Bazooka Gum. No, there's no worry about breaking your teeth because you bit into the little pink brick, but if you're concerned over cavities, the sweetness will definitely help ruin your forming hole.

Either way, it was interesting. I have to say this is not something I'd be looking to make every day, but would contemplate buying the other flavors, just to see if they're just as memorable as this one. It would turn into a bad habit and bad health decision if I opted for one of these mixes on a weekly basis! Say goodbye to my coffee addiction and hello to my sugar high!

Bzzzzzzzzzzz ... Fwah!

I've got a bag of coffee candy & I'm still being tracked

I finally joined the fitness tracker bandwagon. After having a bit of a mishap with my phone two weeks ago, I did some research, bit the bullet, and ordered (what was at the time) a "cheap but decently reviewed" fitness tracker smart watch.

Amazon has it labeled as "Damusy Fitness Tracker, Smart Watch Bluetooth Pedometer Activity Waterproof Wristband with Sleep Monitor Sports Bracelet Calories Track Call/SMS Remind for iOS & Android Smart Phone" and it's currently priced at $32.99. When I bought it (a mere seven days ago), it was $19.99. I figured that for what I really want it for, I don't need the $50+ watches. Unfortunately, there are a lot of pros and cons with this watch, and although I'm going to be keeping it, my experience has led as a reminder of doing a due diligence with further research.

I'll start off by saying this: It seems to accurately track steps. As I sit here and type, the counter on the watch isn't going any higher than it should be. Meaning, the mini computer in this thing is not counting my typing as steps. Somehow, it knows the difference between an arm swing, typing, any general hand movement, and actual walking. Don't ask me how; I don't know. The counter goes up in numbers as my hand moves, however, it goes down to what it thinks you've done for exercise. Simply stated, I just checked the steps number; it went from 6926 to 6946 as I typed this paragraph. The numbers then went back down to 6926 because I think it somehow knew my hand movement was not related to walking. Since there is an option in the app to remind you to get off your butt and do some walking (it's called the Sedentary toggle), it "just knows".

Okay... on to the rest of the review.

I should have done more research in syncing the tracker to the apps I already have on my iPhone (MyFitnessPal and Runkeeper). Both apps have approved apps and devices they can sync up with, if you decide to purchase a smart watch or just want to use the motion tracking on your phone. Because I must have misread a reviewer saying they got their MFP and RK apps to see this tracker, I bought it. Wrong. Once I had it in my hands and did more searching, the smartband used to sync to the fitness apps. For whatever reason that was bestowed upon using this thing, the major players decided to kick it to the curb. Thus, the only app that can sync / bind / be seen / used with the band is a free app called VeryFitPro.

VeryFitPro has mixed reviews in the Apple store. Once downloaded, if you're savvy enough to figure out how to pair the watch to your device, you're okay (once you charge the band... which took me about 55 minutes to get to 100%). I have yet to create an account with this app, so the minimal information it wants (height, weight, age, goal steps [sports target], sleep target [how long you'd like it to track your sleeping]) is okay with me.

Side note: it is pretty cool when you get to your daily goal steps - the tracker has a light vibration that occurs and the screen lights up - it shows a trophy and your numbers.

When you get everything to start talking to each other, you can customize the settings to however you want - lifting your wrist turns the watch on so you can see the time, turning the aforementioned sedentary alert on or off, setting a daily alarm (to which it lightly vibrates when the time happens), you can play with the camera part - this acts as a remote (I'll post a couple pictures and a video to prove this), and setting the SNS (text) alert as well as call alert. The SNS alert can link to SMS, Facebook, Wechat, QQ, Twitter, and other major brands. When you receive a text or notification from someone, there is a scrolling text where you can see who is notifying you and what they said. If they send an image, you can't see that unless you view it on your phone. With calls, it notifies you who is calling, but you'd have to go to your phone in order to accept or decline the call. With all the alerts and notifications this thing does, there is a toggle to have it warn you when you're out of (Bluetooth) range of your phone. This is dependent on what walls are around you - are you in the middle of a brick building or have open doors? Allegedly it has a 16 foot radius, but I've made it around my house and the B is still lit. But putting my phone on charge in an AV closet at work, to then reset a room, the watch can't see the phone.

Which brings me to battery drain. Leaving the Bluetooth on with this watch and my phone all day, my phone battery drains like nobody's business. I start my morning (at 7:30) with full battery. By noon it's around the 60% mark, sometimes 50, depending on if I've pulled my phone out at lunch to sync the steps information. By the time I leave work (at 4:30ish), my battery has been between 30 and 40 per cent. As oppose to the actual watch's battery, which is at a steady 72% right now. I haven't charged it since it arrived at my doorstep on Tuesday. Other reviews state the watch can last about 7 days. No mention about phones, though. I don't think it's any other apps using my phone, as I make sure to not have any running through out the day. I really think it's the fitness tracker, and it only happens when the phone and tracker are near each other, as I've left my phone in my car on Thursday when I got to work. In eight hours (of using the tracker on my wrist and having my phone [turned on, even] in my car), my phone read 80% battery life. So it definitely has to be the tracker and it is probably always trying to connect to my phone, to lower my battery usage.

General other challenges include walking outside during daylight hours and not seeing the screen light up. You want to know what time it is, you have to be in the shade because this is a black watch, black face and white numbers and letters. It makes telling time a moot point unless you can get indoors. Or just pull your phone out.

I want to backtrack to the fitness app syncing. I've got MFP and RK connected to iHealth (aka HealhKit) in my iPhone. My steps write to iHealth which then gets recorded into MyFitnessPal. I can manually enter exercises into Runkeeper which then writes to MyFitnessPal. They all have played nicely for over a year. I'm happy with how they're working and I've got no gripes. Add VeryFitPro to the mix, and it's like oil to water. VeryFitPro can write steps to iHealth, but then iHealth doesn't communicate that to the other two apps. MFP and RK only see / record / etc. what iHealth captures, unless you are using an approved brand. This means something like Misfit Shine Activity MonitorFitbitGarmin vívofit 2 Activity Tracker / Garmin Activity Trackers and a few other big name products, all have no problem in reading / writing / syncing to the apps used. Like having to download VeryFitPro to use the Damusy tracker, you do have to download the app for whatever product you've bought in order to have the fitness apps know you're using it. Unless there's a way to manually enter the information into the apps themselves.

Which I seem to have found a slight workaround.

In MyFitnessPal, there's an option to manually enter cardio or strength training. Scrolling through the smart watch, I can find the amount of time I've "worked out" (aka total time it measured me actually stepping through the day). Enter those minutes in the minutes category (once you select what exercise you did... ie "walking, 3.0 mph, leisurely pace") and MyFitnessPal fills in the rest (calories burned), and adds it to your total caloric exercise.

It seems like a lousy way to enter everything, but until the three apps can see each other, this is what has to be done.

Yes, I've sent a feedback email to VeryFitPro, but seeing how they are an Asian company and things need to be translated, I haven't heard anything yet. I don't think they respond to queries. The thing I didn't like about sending feedback, is there is an option to send a .zip folder with your email. It contains logs from using the app, including a text file with your phone information ("device info"). It's not your number that's included -that's nothing to worry about. But it's your phone's name (whatever you named your phone), phone brand / model, installed OS, app name, firmware version, MAC address, and more scarily important: your phone's UDID. I researched what UDID is and the internet told me it's "like your phone's Social Security Number".

UDID's description is as follows: "a unique device identifier (UDID) is a 40-character string assigned to certain Apple devices including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Each UDID character is a numeral or a letter of the alphabet. Using the UDID, third parties, particularly app vendors, can track subscriber behavior." (Definition: unique device identifier (UDID)).

I don't like that if you send feedback to the company, they want all the nitty gritty particulars of the phone. They don't need to know my phone's identification numbers, as it's not relevant to the conversation, I think. Unless they are Apple (or Verizon, who is my phone provider), there is no reason any one or thing needs more than an email address to respond to, what app I'm using and what the problem is.

All in all, I am going to continue using this thing and see what it can do. Maybe I'll upgrade in the future, maybe not. It'll depend on how crazy things get and if I follow my own advice and do major comparisons / research.

That's it for now. I'll probably do more posting about this as the weeks progress.

"I am the passenger..."

Seeing how it's Monday and I had to be at the community church moving tables around, I happened to find someone who didn't have a ticket to ride. He tried to be very still and very quiet as I was scurrying around, trying to take an eight foot table from outside and bring it inside.

For some reason, something told me to look down at the table I was carrying. Lo and behold, a small tan frog was staring back at me. I swear, he didn't move a iota when I tried moving the table leg, as well as take various pictures. He must have known I wouldn't hurt him, or maybe he was ready for his closeup Mr. DeMille. Either way, when I did move the table close to an outside wall and find a stick, I gently nudged him onto the wall. He stayed there for I don't know how long, as I had to finish my job. I took a lot of photos and too much time "playing" with this thing as it was... the clock on the wall ain't stuck at 3 these days.

I guess this can be added to the "things you see at work" column?

Or, as my squirrely friend Foamy said in a text: "Ribbit, motherf*cker"

Nut(s)

I was recently given a huge bag of walnuts, in the shell, and told to do what I wish with them. As they were being eaten one day, I figured I'd take my Fotodiox Canon EOS Macro Extension Tube Set and my Canon EOS Rebel T3 Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens out and "play with a few nuts".

I didn't do a lot of touch up on the pictures (in Photoshop) because they look cool without a ton of effects. I've got a close up of the walnuts, something similar to New Star Foodservice Nutcracker, and to mix it up - the carpet under one of the tables.

Go play with your food!
